Our Patron

Saint Richard

BISHOP OF CHICHESTER

1198 – 1253

Richard de Wyche was born in the town of Droitwich, England, the second son of prosperous parents.  From early childhood, Richard entertained a burning desire for learning.  He entered Oxford University, studied in the intellectual centers of Europe, finally received the Doctor of Canon Law degree, and returned to Oxford as Chancellor.

Richard’s career had been watched with interest by Saint Edmund Rich, former Oxford Chancellor and Archbishop of Canterbury.  Saint Edmund invited Richard to become his chancellor.  Richard accepted the invitation and continued as a close companion and assistant to Saint Edmund until the latter’s death.

Following the passing of Saint Edmund, Richard joined the Dominican house of studies at Orleans, France, studying and lecturing.  It was there that he was ordained a priest by the Bishop of Orleans in 1243.  He then returned to England and worked as a parish priest in Deal.  In 1244, the Bishop of Chichester died, and King Henry III nominated a political ally to fill the vacancy.  However, the Archbishop of Canterbury chose Richard to fill the vacant see and refused to confirm the king’s choice.  The situation was brought to the attention of Pope Innocent IV, who decided in favor of Richard and personally consecrated him on March 5, 1245.  King Henry, in his anger, refused to allow Richard to take possession of the Bishop’s palace until two years later, when he was threatened with excommunication by the Pope.

Although his situation had now changed and he was solemnly enthroned, Richard continued to live a life of simplicity and austerity.  When told that his alms-giving exceeded his income, Richard instructed his steward to sell his gold and silver plates as well as his horse and distribute the money among the poor of his diocese.

Saint Richard died in 1253, at the age of 55, at the house for poor priests and pilgrims called Maison-Dieu.  He was canonized in 1262 by Pope Urban IV.  Saint Richard is remembered for his kindness, humility, and for being a model of holiness for the people of his time

Saint Richard’s Prayer

Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ,

For all the benefits which Thou hast given me,

For all the pains and insults which Thou hast borne for me,

O most merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother,

May I know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly,

And follow Thee more nearly, day by day.

Amen.

Our Logo

Created by our very own parish family members, Summer Rose Biros and Angela Nemshick, in June 2025, the parish logo comes with a story and great symbolism.  Summer Rose and Angela describe their inspiration for elements of the logo this way:

“When designing something for Saint Richard, we wanted it to reflect our patron and our Catholic faith through its imagery.”

  • The Host

“The Host is the central image in the logo, to signify its position at the center of our Catholic faith.  We believe that the Host is the Body of Christ, who becomes our Bread for the journey that is this life. This reminds us to focus on Jesus’ Holy Sacrifice as our model for loving God and neighbor through serving others.”

  • The Chalice

“Saint Richard himself is known for a miracle where he dropped the Chalice during the Liturgy of the Eucharist at one Mass.  Miraculously, not one drop of Precious Blood was spilled.”

  • The Stained Glass Window

“Stained glass windows are a splendid expression of art as an aid to understanding sacred Scripture.  Our church’s beautiful stained glass windows are a prominent feature, thus earning a spot in our logo.”

  • The Color Green

“Our building is accented with green in the carpeting as well as in the beautiful stained glass windows.”

Our Church

What began in 1949 with eight children gathered for religious instruction in a private home culminated in 1957 with the construction of Saint Richard Church in the Borough of Manheim.  It is a testament to the faith and fortitude of those early parishioners, family members of whom are still active parishioners today, that we have such a special place to call our home.  Our small parish offers a close-knit community, plenty of opportunity for active participation in ministries, more personal pastoral care, and a more intimate worship experience.

Our Community… Manheim, Pennsylvania

The following excerpt is taken from the Manheim Borough website.

“Welcome to Manheim Borough.  Since 1762, when Baron Stiegel founded our town, Manheim has valued its history and looks ahead to the future.  Our historic buildings and lively business district show the dedication and pride of the people who live here.  Manheim is known for being friendly and welcoming.  If you are visiting, thinking about moving here, or just spending time downtown, you will find a community that values its traditions and is ready to grow.  Come see what makes Manheim a great place to live, work, and visit.”
